Release Notes:
With a sneak-peek off their upcoming full-length album, breaking new band VELOPHONE, headed by RealDEEP front man Brian (Bjak) Cullen, Janet Cruz & Jono Eiland, gives us an exclusive promotional preview of their single “We’re All The Same”. Composed of lyrics overflowing with emotional depth and melancholy undertones, “We’re All The Same” is a bitter sweet tale of a love unrequited, and the struggles “we all” go through to find the light at the end of the tunnel. With remixes by Cesar Ramirez, DOTS, and Eargasmic Recording’s Daryl Cura, our artists get the chance to tell their own renditions of this timeless tale.
Starting off the EP is the original album version of “We’re All The Same”. This funky, neo-soul flavored tune erupts with fiery, broken-beat rhythms, lush synths & super funky bassline, clavs & wah-guitar, topped off with the sweet lyrics of lead vocalist Janet Cruz. Next up we see our first remix by blossoming RealDEEP Recordings artist Cesar Ramirez. Showcasing Janet’s unique vocal style, Cesar lets the full vocal ride over stomping four-on the floor kicks and high-hats, ridden with classic-house piano riffs and drivingly playful basslines. Complete with great build-ups & breakdowns, this tune is built for the dancefloor. Next up is DOTS heartfelt and personal interpretation of this song which was, literally, written about him! DOTS’ string & synth heavy, shoegazer rendition of this single takes a very unique twist from the original and dares to break free from the obligatory constraints of the typical dance music format. Fusing together a stimulating pallet of electronic textures, DOTS mix is more heavily geared towards furnishing the listener with a greater emotional experience, and his unique examination of this song gives us a strong taste of the culmination of the sound known simply as DOTS. Rounding out the EP is Eargasmic Recordings’ head honcho, Daryl Cura with a super deep slice of Harmonie Park style house. Using snips & bits of the original vocals and synths, Daryl styles a perfect B-Side stomper which highlights a unique shade of the original and sends this EP wheeling over the RealDEEP edge! With a little something for everyone, this VELOPHONE remix project sews another important patch onto our ever-expanding quilt of RealDEEP releases.

VELOPHONE

Often, bands are formed when like-minded musicians come together out of a love for a particular style of music. They often share a fondness for a specific genre and find themselves with similar goals and aims regarding the sound they want to manufacture. But, on the rare occasion, an unlikely group of musicians with vastly different musical backgrounds, tastes and interests find themselves together with instruments in hand & open minds, and a powerful & unique fusion takes place.
Sounding something like a cross between Cocteau Twins & Mazzy Starr meets Jazzanova, VELOPHONE members Janet Cruz, Brian Cullen & Jono Eiland admit that, although uncommon, the band’s “3 man” structure and “Jack of All Trades” mentality make its stage presence as unconventional as its sound. While the band was originally formed with Janet Cruz on Lead Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, Brian Cullen on Beats & Bass Guitar, and Jono Eiland on Lead Guitar, you’ll regularly hear them switching between instruments as well, from song to song, further coloring outside the lines of your typical band.
Equally sharing songwriting duties for the group, each member has a chance to showcase their distinct sound. Janet’s folk-influenced yet sultry vocals along side her sweeping talents as a songwriter and acoustic, solo performing artist at college coffee shops and bars greatly contrasts Brian’s background behind the studio producing electronic music and DJing under flashing lights in front of sweaty mobs. In turn, Jono’s Rhythm and Blues and Jam Band inspired riffs are another seemingly disparate pieceheight=”188″ /> of this puzzle, but in the end, something unexpected and unusual happens. When indelible grooves are King and sorrow is Queen, sounds collide, and you find VELOPHONE.
After splashing the scene with a handful of live gigs throughout their home base of L.A., at such venues as Molly Malone’s, Room 5 & The East West Player’s Club, the band is currently taking time away from their live performances to focus all their attention in the studio, where they are in the process of cutting their first full length album. Although the release date is not scheduled until the end of 2010, the single “We’re All The Same” from their upcoming album can now be found on all major download sites as an exclusive promotion, licensed by RealDEEP Recordings. Complete with the original mix as well as 4-additional dance-floor friendly re-mixes by artists Cesar Ramirez, D.O.T.S, and Daryl Cura, this special promotional release is not to be missed!
