Release Notes:
RealDEEP’s first ever Sampler EP brings together some seriously deep new material from fresh new faces Don Clark a.k.a. re:search and South African artist Arnold Tempo, as well as from some veteran RealDEEP recording artists, including Cesar Ramirez, Apple Jazz, Brian Gardner, and Bjak. With a small taste from some of our favorite RealDEEP artisans, you’re sure to love our first installment of the Amuse Bouche EP!
Dishing out the first bite is Chicagoan, Don Clark a.k.a. re:search, with a piece entitled “On My Own”. Warm, wooly tones and dubby synths meet fiery congas and minimalistic percussion in this ultra deep cut. With his first, solo EP coming soon on RealDEEP, this tune gives us a sweet taste of what’s to come from his kitchen. The next two dishes come to us straight out of South Africa. First is RealDEEP favorite Apple Jazz, back at it again with another slice of deep melodies and harmonies entitled “Find The Way”. Sweet and subdued rhodes sprinkled with piano solos simmered in Apple’s secret ingredients bring us this tasty treat. Spicing things up is another newcomer, Arnold Tempo. Often found cookin’ it up in the kitchen along side Apple Jazz in their homebase of Pretoria, this master chef has stepped up to the plate to serve us a fiery hot new tune called “The Flute’s Punishment”. This dark roasted and driving percussive gem keeps things on a rolling boil until Arnold steps in and “punishes” a ripping flute riff, turning the temperature on this dish up a notch. Back with us again is artist Brian Gardner featuring vocalist Brenda D. with their new tune “I Knew It Was You”. Brian’s signature chunky & warped beats send this song ripping out of the starting gates, ready to tear a hole in any dancefloor. Ripe with Prescription sounding synth stabs, mellow pads and Brenda’s beutiful vocal snips, this rich little morsel is chock full of flavor. Rolling out another recipe for love is Bjak with his addition to the mix, “Old Photographs”. Bjak explores a variety of flavors using rich pianos, dreamy rhodes and unexpected and moody transitions. Spiced up with stabbing strings, rolling basslines and dubbed-out vocal snips, this deep burner leaves your tastebuds yearning for more. Mellowing out the flavor a bit and finishing off our Amuse Bouche Sampler is blossoming RealDEEP musician Cesar Ramirez. Squeezing this little beauty in between his first release, “The Remeberance EP”, and his upcoming release, “The Heartwork EP”, Cesar brings us the single “Water’s Edge”. Rolling congas and minty basslines are topped with melancholy keys riffs which drip from this little delicacy like warm caramel. Beautifully cleansing the pallet, this cut finishes off our first sampler with a silky-smooth finish. Bon appetit!

by admin on Jul.04, 2009, under Releases
Some of Soul Foundation’s finest have teamed up to bring you another RealDEEP journey in sound entitled the “MUXICARIA EP, by RealDEEP recording artists Brian Gardner & Bjak (otherwise known as “BCBG” ) and featuring the vocals and production talents of Brenda D. These three skillful musicians have shared the decks at some of the hottest underground & club events across the country for well over a decade, and they’re now harnessing this energy and experience in the studio to bring a fresh new direction to RealDEEP’s swiftly expanding library. This 4 track EP starts off with “Feelin’ Moved” by Brian G. & Brenda D., a chunky, oldskool Chicago deep houser, rich in dubbed out vocals, pulsing organs and thick, swinging drum-lines. Next up, strap on your seatbelt for “Libra Rising”, by Bjak & Brian G. This track layers up the pads which swirl and rise to a frantic climax…and just when you think you can’t get any higher, hold on tight. Track three, “So Good”, comes straight out of the BCBG vaults and sends the EP into a much funkier direction while still keeping true to that RealDEEP sound. Capping off the EP is “So Blue”, another Brian G. & Brenda D. original. This is a warm late night thunker, characterized by Brian’s signature drum programming and plush keyboards as well as vocals and additional production by Brenda D. The “MUXICARIA ep” continues in the RealDEEP tradition by bringing you yet another quality installment of unique and original deep house music, sure to please even the most discriminating eardrums.

Brian Gardner

::: RealDEEP Recordings | Soul Foundation | Music 101 | WAXaddict :::
Brian Gardner may have discovered his passion for DJing by accident, but his success is far from accidental. As a veteran of the Chicago House music scene for more than 15 years, Gardner has emerged as a versatile DJ and producer who manipulates everything from soulful, jazzy jack to the harder beats of industrial and techno. More recently, Gardner has stepped into the role as one of the booking directors for Chicago’s Music-101.com, where he brings in an array of top-tier House talent while promoting the underground vibrancy that makes the city’s house scene glow.
Gardner’s love for underground House stems back to his childhood days in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. While the “Hot Mix 5″ DJs on the historic WBMX 102.7 dial sparked his passion for the music, it was involvement in the rave scene of the early 1990’s that first introduced him to the full spectrum of underground, electronic sound. When some friends asked if he could look after a set of turntables for them in 1993, Gardner saw it as an open call to experiment with beat matching and mixing. With his friends never reclaiming the tables, he delved deeper into his newfound passion, buying records and playing numerous house parties across the city.
In the mid 1990s, Gardner elevated his underground status by joining the ranks of Chicago’s Soul Foundation Kollective, where he and fellow House cohorts including Traxx, Jevon Jackson, Frique, Brenda D and John Simmons created an electronic blueprint of house music history. The legendary Soul Foundation parties allowed Gardner to step into his own as both a performer on the decks and promoter of the events. In 1998, he took on the role of House buyer of Chicago’s Hot Jams records while earning playing time at premiere underground venues including Smart Bar, Boom Boom Room and Mad Bar, to name a few. His success on and behind the scenes landed him the position as manager and house buyer for WAXaddict records in 2002.
Gardner currently juggles multiple hats of being DJing, producing, promoting and booking events. In (2000) he joined the ranks of Chicago’s visible Music 101 promotions team where he works as a production manager for bookings, event coordinator and web site administrator. On the DJ tip, he and production partner/wife Brenda D have held their three-year, Friday night house residency, Bootlegged, at Chicago’s Moonshine. Gardner himself commands presence on a weekly basis throughout the city, bringing a fresh flavor to the typical four-by-four beat.
“Acid, deep, jackin’, old school-I’m not limiting myself to any one genre of House,” Gardner says. More recently, his style has taken him the route of “deep boompty house,” which are slower beats characterized by big vocals. “I’m not interested in putting people to sleep,” he says of his performance style. “Good music is just good music.”
Gardner releases his first nationally distributed C.D. in fall 2007 on the San Francisco-based Loveslap! Recordings label. The mix C.D. features his mix of the label’s back-catalogued cuts.
“You always have to recreate yourself-you can’t get stuck in your niche,” Gardner says of his evolving career. “It’s an exciting time for House music in Chicago.”
