Release Notes:
RealDEEP’s first ever Sampler EP brings together some seriously deep new material from fresh new faces Don Clark a.k.a. re:search and South African artist Arnold Tempo, as well as from some veteran RealDEEP recording artists, including Cesar Ramirez, Apple Jazz, Brian Gardner, and Bjak. With a small taste from some of our favorite RealDEEP artisans, you’re sure to love our first installment of the Amuse Bouche EP!

Dishing out the first bite is Chicagoan, Don Clark a.k.a. re:search, with a piece entitled “On My Own”. Warm, wooly tones and dubby synths meet fiery congas and minimalistic percussion in this ultra deep cut. With his first, solo EP coming soon on RealDEEP, this tune gives us a sweet taste of what’s to come from his kitchen. The next two dishes come to us straight out of South Africa. First is RealDEEP favorite Apple Jazz, back at it again with another slice of deep melodies and harmonies entitled “Find The Way”. Sweet and subdued rhodes sprinkled with piano solos simmered in Apple’s secret ingredients bring us this tasty treat. Spicing things up is another newcomer, Arnold Tempo. Often found cookin’ it up in the kitchen along side Apple Jazz in their homebase of Pretoria, this master chef has stepped up to the plate to serve us a fiery hot new tune called “The Flute’s Punishment”. This dark roasted and driving percussive gem keeps things on a rolling boil until Arnold steps in and “punishes” a ripping flute riff, turning the temperature on this dish up a notch. Back with us again is artist Brian Gardner featuring vocalist Brenda D. with their new tune “I Knew It Was You”. Brian’s signature chunky & warped beats send this song ripping out of the starting gates, ready to tear a hole in any dancefloor. Ripe with Prescription sounding synth stabs, mellow pads and Brenda’s beutiful vocal snips, this rich little morsel is chock full of flavor. Rolling out another recipe for love is Bjak with his addition to the mix, “Old Photographs”. Bjak explores a variety of flavors using rich pianos, dreamy rhodes and unexpected and moody transitions. Spiced up with stabbing strings, rolling basslines and dubbed-out vocal snips, this deep burner leaves your tastebuds yearning for more. Mellowing out the flavor a bit and finishing off our Amuse Bouche Sampler is blossoming RealDEEP musician Cesar Ramirez. Squeezing this little beauty in between his first release, “The Remeberance EP”, and his upcoming release, “The Heartwork EP”, Cesar brings us the single “Water’s Edge”. Rolling congas and minty basslines are topped with melancholy keys riffs which drip from this little delicacy like warm caramel. Beautifully cleansing the pallet, this cut finishes off our first sampler with a silky-smooth finish. Bon appetit!

“We’re All The Same” by VELOPHONE
A1. “VELOPHONE Orig. Mix”
A2. “Cesar Ramirez’ Stoneflower Mix”
B1. “DOTS’ Shoegaze Strings Mix”
B2. “Daryl Cura’s Eargasmic Mix”

Release Notes:
With a sneak-peek off their upcoming full-length album, breaking new band VELOPHONE, headed by RealDEEP front man Brian (Bjak) Cullen, Janet Cruz & Jono Eiland, gives us an exclusive promotional preview of their single “We’re All The Same”. Composed of lyrics overflowing with emotional depth and melancholy undertones, “We’re All The Same” is a bitter sweet tale of a love unrequited, and the struggles “we all” go through to find the light at the end of the tunnel. With remixes by Cesar Ramirez, DOTS, and Eargasmic Recording’s Daryl Cura, our artists get the chance to tell their own renditions of this timeless tale.

Starting off the EP is the original album version of “We’re All The Same”. This funky, neo-soul flavored tune erupts with fiery, broken-beat rhythms, lush synths & super funky bassline, clavs & wah-guitar, topped off with the sweet lyrics of lead vocalist Janet Cruz. Next up we see our first remix by blossoming RealDEEP Recordings artist Cesar Ramirez. Showcasing Janet’s unique vocal style, Cesar lets the full vocal ride over stomping four-on the floor kicks and high-hats, ridden with classic-house piano riffs and drivingly playful basslines. Complete with great build-ups & breakdowns, this tune is built for the dancefloor. Next up is DOTS heartfelt and personal interpretation of this song which was, literally, written about him! DOTS’ string & synth heavy, shoegazer rendition of this single takes a very unique twist from the original and dares to break free from the obligatory constraints of the typical dance music format. Fusing together a stimulating pallet of electronic textures, DOTS mix is more heavily geared towards furnishing the listener with a greater emotional experience, and his unique examination of this song gives us a strong taste of the culmination of the sound known simply as DOTS. Rounding out the EP is Eargasmic Recordings’ head honcho, Daryl Cura with a super deep slice of Harmonie Park style house. Using snips & bits of the original vocals and synths, Daryl styles a perfect B-Side stomper which highlights a unique shade of the original and sends this EP wheeling over the RealDEEP edge! With a little something for everyone, this VELOPHONE remix project sews another important patch onto our ever-expanding quilt of RealDEEP releases.

Re-emerging from a long awaited hiatus, Derek brings us “Lake Shore Drive” [RDR008], a testament to the classic Chicago house sound of the late 80’s. With drum-kits and bassline reminiscent of a Frankie Knuckles classic, carried by a dancing flute-line & driven by a perced-out organ, Derek pulls off this classic sound like only a true Chicago House veteran can! “Side B” sees a remix by seasoned RealDEEP recordings artist Bjak, who adds his own characteristic twist to Derek’s classic mix. With the addition of warm keyboards, funky clavs, stabbing synth lines & organic percussion, Bjak adds his signature sound to Derek’s orignal mix, turning up the energy and turning the hands of time about 10 years forward into Chicago’s underground sound. Imbued with the vibe of Chicago’s heyday, but with a subtly updated sound for today’s discriminating dance music enthusiast, “Lake Shore Drive” adds more fabric to RealDEEP’s ever-growing quilt of releases.

This sizzling 3 track EP heats up with the sun “High in the Sky”, a forceful and driving yet organic and dubby four on the floor, great for those difficult transitions. Changing up the pace is “Secret Garden”, a cinematic, broken-beat orchestration, rich in lush keys and searing percussion. Rounding out the EP is “Dusk”, a darker, more heavily layered track, rich in piano and riddled with tweaked-out synth leads. Another hot release from the RealDEEP camp!

This release further explores the diversity of this artist’s sound, offering up four uniquely distinct, yet cohesive compositions. “Gimme All Ur Love” is a sexy mid-tempo groover driven by haunting sax riffs, bongos and serenading vocals. The second movement, “Besa la Brisa” is a dreamy, twilight excursion into music, conjuring images of flamenco by moonlight. Sending your *ss straight back to the dance-floor is “Set Ur Body Free”, a melodic body mover driven by a stompy kick, sultry vocals and rolling bass lines. Sinking the EP deeper is “Spirit”, a rhythmic and whirling builder, showcasing Bjak’s signature blend of warm, dubby keys, sizzling percussion and dark pads. This EP is another balmy edition to RealDEEP’s rapidly expanding musical mélange.

This dynamic duo has been rocking dance- floors together world wide for over 10 years and have now finally joined forces in the studio to create “The Essensual EP”, a fiery 3 tracker that is sure to keep the Deep Housers on their toes. “HotBox” and “Fashion” blur the boundaries between the classic sounds of Chicago/Detroit/NYC to create two dancefloor bombs which have already seen play from some of the masters. “DarkMelodie” is a much deeper and moodier piece, distinctly characteristic of the RealDEEP sound. Definitely another important release in our label’s repertoire…enjoy!

This 4track EP kicks off with “Free2Love”, as sexy stomper which brings together lush keys and dubby vocals reminiscent of the mid-90’s Chicago early morning loft scene. “The Ritual” is a dark, metallic downbeat banger rich in percussion and drenched in the Mid-West underground sound. Track 3, “Paradise”, is as its name implies, simply paradise. From the lounge to the dancefloor, this piece is carrying heat! Finishing off the EP is “Lifeline”, a jazzy but electrified journey driven by heavy piano riffs and cosmic pads. This EP heralds the first in a series of ultra-deep house music 4theHeads!

The energy of Chicago’s loft party scene inspired a great many musicians and DJs. Brian J.A. Cullen a.k.a. “Bjak” is no stranger to the sound of deep house, a signature element at the time. He is a long-standing member of the renowned group of Chicago house DJs known as Soul Foundation Kollective. This alliance, and their control over several Chicago venues and a number of tours, helped cut his teeth as a DJ, and ever since he has been moving dance floors worldwide with sets of percussive, soulful house music.

Throughout his career, Bjak’s sets have been diverse and the trend continues unabated. Never fitting a particular mold, he seamlessly incorporates disparate elements of classic dance music—even the occasional dub or Pixies tune—with a sound that’s unmistakably deep, vocal-fused house. With a range that includes Latin grooves to percussion-laden warehouse stompers, a Bjak set works the dancefloor by taking listeners far outside the box.

Bjak’s attention to the deeper side of these genres helped him craft a vision that culminated into WAXaddict Records, a Chicago-based, online record store that specialized in known TOP-CHOICE house music and cutting-edge techno, alongside ultra-rare disco and classic electronica. A physical store in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood matched the diversity of online offerings. Years on the business side of the music industry led Bjak to renew his focus on production efforts, and he channeled this energy into studio work, resulting in oft-praised vinyl-only releases on Eargasmic Recordings including, Thoughts from Chicago, Vol. 2, in 2008 and RealDEEP EP, in 2009.

Bjak tracks employ atmospheric grooves, dubbed-out vocals, and bouncing basslines, layered over relentless percussion. His music has been discussed in the same breath as legends like Larry Heard and Kerri Chandler, with strong ties to the sounds of Prescription and Strictly Rhythm, but Bjak feels his approach is a subtle update to the loft party vibe he has cultivated for well over a decade.

During this cultivation, he recognized the lack of deep house offerings and knew that creating such an outlet was the logical next step. In 2008, with fellow Foundation member, Julio Bishop, Bjak launched RealDEEP Recordings, which provides him and his growing roster with a platform for the loft party sound they champion. The label’s releases have seen much acclaim, and Bjak is encouraged about upcoming projects.

Beyond RealDEEP, Bjak has been adding new and interesting layers to his already diverse sound. His recent involvement with the band, Velophone, infuses indie and traditional rock elements with downtempo grooves and sultry vocals. Singer Janet Cruz and Bjak share songwriting duties for the group, and the pair provides live guitar, bass, and keyboard accompaniment atop digital percussion, resulting in a neo-soul-meets-house-music jam band aesthetic.

After sowing the seeds of success through Soul Foundation DJ gigs and WAXaddict, Bjak has fused his influential histories, finding a musical and spiritual home at RealDEEP Recordings.
